The female vocal ensemble “The Mermaids” was formed in 2013 by Dr. Ogawa and the alumni member of Yokohama National University and Tokyo College of Music. Since then, the choir has performed at various concerts including major choir festivals in Tokyo and Yokohama. Currently, it consists of twelve professionally trained member in voice.
The concept at the time of launch was “a soloist group with advanced ensemble ability”. The policy of aiming for an advanced ensemble by making use of the various possibilities of voice has not changed since its formation. Another unique point of this choir is that all member are music educators of elementary schools, secondary schools. Therefore, the choir group also serves as a training place for active music teachers and a place for expression, and will become an organization of educational significance.
Recently “the Mermaids” won the gold prize in 2018 at the Kanagawa vocal ensemble contest and the second prize (silver) in February 2019 at Tokyo vocal ensemble contest. The repertoire is broadly taken from European, north American and Japanese contemporary literature, both sacred and secular. Today is our memorial performance of playing outside Japan for the first time.
