The Children’s Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, along with the opera houses and other institutions within and outside of Berlin, has proved itself to be trustworthy musical partner. It offers an established musical education for young singers who meet twice weekly in order to rehearse children’s choir parts of the opera works La Bohème, Un ballo in maschera, Tosca, Turandot, Boris Godunow, The Queen of Spades, The Night of the Rose, Carmen, Puss in Boots, or the Nutcracker ballet, along with current concert repertoires. Three singing instructors provide a demonstrably effective voice training method.
During the 2007/2008 season, Vinzenz Weissenburger took over the direction of the Children’s Choir and has since then continuously expanded not only its sphere of action but also its public presence. Alongside frequent appearances on the opera stage, concerts in the city opera (e.g. the traditional Christmas concert with the Staatskapelle Berlin) in addition to guest performance journeys both in and out of country (France, Poland, Czech Republic, Luxemburg, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Vietnam and China), as well as cooperation with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic or the Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra and concert tours to Vietnam, China and the U.S.A. give the Choir its unique artistic identity.
In May 2013 the Children’s Choir of the City Opera won the die Gold medallion at the International Competition “Siauliai Cantat” (Lithuania) and in June 2013 the 1st prize (“with outstanding success”) at the Country-Competition in Berlin. It went on to compete in the 2014 German Choir Competition in Weimar, and could win the 1st Prize with the second highest score of all participants. In May 2015 it reached 2 Gold medallions at the 4th Int. Choir Festival in Hoi An, Vietnam. Vinzenz Weissenburger was awarded with the „Conductors Prize for Outstanding Achievement“.
In 2012 the young singers collaborated with the Berlin Philharmony and Sir Simon Rattle on a concert performance and the recording of a CD of Bizet’s Carmen. In May 2014 the Children’s Choir of the City Opera will be recognized with Geschwister-Mendelssohn-Medallion of the Berliner Choir Union. On the 1st of June 2014 the Choir appeared before more than ten thousand visitors in the prelude of “City Opera for All” at Bebelplatz.
